CHILDRENS SPACES/ARCHITECTURE

These exemplars create environments that consider the specific needs of their diminutive users, both in terms of how they negotiate space and how they respond to surroundings that engage and stimulate, while at the same time producing expressive buildings that can be appreciated on an aesthetic level by the more adult of us.

To design a childrens space, I needed to understand them and question how and what would impact a childs experience. I want to allow children to have that sense of journey and experience of different spaces that are big and small.
MODEL MAKING
These models were made in order to understand the relationship of the individual spaces and how people can access them. The understanding of the interior spaces also determined the exterior, however while doing this exercise, the facade was questioned and weather or not it shows the concept of evolution. Finding a balance between the two was the challenge as form follows function yet form also needs to be aesthetically pleasing and needs to be able to tell an overall story of the concept
FILTERING SUNLIGHT

"In climates where harsh levels of heat and sunlight can create uncomfortable conditions, striking a balance between light and shade, warmth and ventilation is an important consideration.Between the glazing and the screens are double-height terraces that blur the boundaries between inside and outside space. The delicate patterning used on the screens references the local vernacular and produces a dappled light that brings an impression of natural shade to the interior.Whether used internally or externally, perforations create a dialogue between spaces; obscuring or inviting views as required and keeping temperature and brightness at a pleasant and practical level.
The use of steel for this project was influenced by the high levels of humidity that the area experiences, which can cause structures made from less robust materials to deteriorate and decay quickly. Steel’s imperviousness to moisture means that it will not shrink or swell, and exposed areas can be galvanised or treated to reduce corrosion."

CONCEPT INSPIRATION: THE CORE
Education Centre: The Core - Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners
This was an example on how a core concept is reflected back to its design. The building is a showcase of environmental responsibility and sustainability. Its form was influenced by nature and art. The design expresses an appreciation of the universal rhythms found in natural forms such as phyllotaxis (Fibonacci sequence or Natures Numbers). The spiky triangular-shaped skylights were influenced by the arrangements of a pinecone. The centre was built specifically for its location.

INSPIRATION: WAUKEGAN CITY HALL
Waukegan City Hall - Legat Architects
What I love about this project was that it responded to the site and existing surrounding buildings. The building is facing the existing police station forming a new plaza between the two buildings. The use of glass allows bypassers to see glimpses of government action and creates an uninterrupted connection between the public spaces and private spaces. It allows the community to have that sense of connection as people are able to use the space as a pathway (physically) and also have that visual/emotional connection due to the use of transparent materials.
